How to choose a humidifier

It's humidifier season, and we know you have questions, so here are the answers. In this "how to choose a humidifier" overview, we explain everything you need to know before you buy. We’ll cover the differences in humidifier sizes, misting types (such as warm versus cool mist), and other features that will help you make the most informed decision when choosing a humidifier.

humidifier type

Ultrasonic: This humidification technology uses a metal diaphragm that vibrates at high frequencies to create a fine cool or warm mist. The fan then blows the mist into the room, where it evaporates instantly. These ultrasonic vibrations kill most bacteria and viruses by breaking down cell walls. Additionally, ultrasonic humidifiers are energy misers and are virtually silent when operating. In the past, ultrasonic humidifiers have had some drawbacks, such as white mineral dust and the build-up of bacteria and mold in the tank. However, many ultrasonic humidifiers (such as those offered by Air-O-Swiss or Stadler Form) are equipped with demineralization cartridges and water cells to offset these disadvantages.

Evaporative: Evaporative humidifiers have a filter element or pad that absorbs water collected in a reservoir. The fan then pushes cool, moist air into the room. Evaporative humidifiers are self-regulating and generally increase the humidity in a room quickly and effectively. If white mineral dust is a concern for you, an evaporative humidifier is a good choice because it delivers only clean, invisible, cool moisture into the air. Some of the downsides to evaporative cool mist humidifiers are filter cost, noise levels at some high fan speeds, and the threat of bacteria forming in stagnant water if not cleaned properly.

Air Purifier Humidifier: The beauty of an air purifier is that it purifies and humidifies at the same time without a filter. The water works with the rotating disc to retain and remove large airborne impurities such as dust, pollen, and particulate odors, while returning clean, properly humidified air to the room. The air purifier is very user-friendly and works according to the principle of self-regulating evaporation to ensure optimal air without additional control systems. These systems are often equipped with ionic silver rods that prevent microbial growth in the water base. They are also relatively easy to maintain, as the discs are dishwasher safe and require no filter changes.

humidifier size

Available in a variety of sizes to meet humidification needs for single rooms, large areas, and travel or personal spaces. Each size offers a different level of performance. The performance level is sometimes referred to as the "Gallon Dispersion Rating", which is how much water turns into wet mist in 24 hours. Humidifier outputs range from 1 to 14 gallons per day.

Each humidifier also provides its own coverage area. Coverage area is the largest square footage that a humidifier can effectively operate on. However, room coverage recommendations should be used as a rough estimate when looking for the ideal humidifier. The manufacturer's recommended room coverage is based on the maximum amount of moisture the humidifier can produce each day when operating in perfect ambient conditions (for example, with the bedroom door closed and running on the highest speed setting). Since everyone's room environment and required speed and output settings are different, it is generally recommended to choose a humidifier that provides the highest output for your particular room and budget.
